Signs & Symptoms
Hip impingement may not cause symptoms or pain in its early stages. However, as it progresses, femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), may present as discomfort, pain, or stiffness in the hip or groin. Pain is most commonly experienced after activity such as:
- Running
- Twisting
- Squatting
- Prolonged sitting
- Sexual intercourse
- Jumping
- Getting in and out of a car
- Sports
When a labrum is torn in the context of FAI, the impingement may continually irritate the torn labrum. Damage to the cartilage leads to arthritis (osteoarthritis). Osteoarthritis often results in pain while walking and in the evening.
Common symptoms of labral tears include:
- Groin pain
- Lateral (outside) hip pain
- Pain radiating down the leg
- Buttock pain
- Snapping or popping
- Catching, clicking, or locking
